What is ISTDP (Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy)?
ISTDP (Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy) was developed by Habib Davanloo and is an intensive, focused therapy form that works on breaking through psychological defence mechanisms to reach suppressed emotions. The therapist is active and confrontational in a caring way. The method is used for anxiety, depression, somatic symptoms, and personality difficulties and is designed to create rapid change.

What makes ISTDP different from other therapies?
ISTDP is characterised by the therapist's active and direct style. Instead of waiting for insight to develop gradually, the therapist works in a focused way to identify and challenge defence mechanisms to reach the underlying emotions faster.
Is ISTDP hard or uncomfortable?
ISTDP can be emotionally intense as you confront suppressed emotions. But the therapist always adjusts the pressure to your capacity. Many experience great relief when they break through to the underlying feelings.
How many sessions does ISTDP require?
As the name suggests, it is a short-term therapy — typically 5-40 sessions. Sessions are often longer (60-90 minutes) and can be more intense than traditional therapy. Single-focus problems can be resolved in a few sessions.
