Who is eligible for a subsidy?
You can receive a psychologist subsidy through the national health insurance if you are over 18 and have a referral from your general practitioner. Referrals are typically given for moderate anxiety or depression. Children and young people under 18 can instead receive free treatment through PPR (Educational Psychological Counseling).
How much does health insurance cover?
The subsidy covers part of the psychologist's fee — typically around 400-500 DKK per session. You pay the rest yourself (co-payment), which is usually 400-700 DKK per session. You can receive subsidies for up to 12 sessions within 12 months.
What does a referral require?
Your general practitioner must assess that you need psychological treatment. Common reasons include moderate to severe anxiety, depression, OCD, PTSD, or reactions to serious illness. The doctor issues a referral that you bring to your first session.
Ydernummer — what does it mean?
To use your subsidy, the psychologist must have a 'ydernummer' — an agreement with the national health insurance that allows them to claim the subsidy directly. Not all psychologists have this, so always check before booking.
Private health insurance and employer coverage
Many Danes have private health insurance through their employer that fully or partially covers psychological treatment — often 8-12 sessions. Check your insurance policy or contact your HR department to learn about your options.
