Forskel på psykolog og psykiater

Mange forveksler psykologer og psykiatere, men der er vigtige forskelle. Her forklarer vi hvem der gør hvad, så du kan vælge den rette hjælp.

Education and background

A psychologist has a 5-year university degree in psychology and can obtain authorization from the Board of Psychologists after 2 years of supervised practice. A psychiatrist is a medical doctor with 5 years of specialist training in psychiatry. The psychiatrist has a medical background, while the psychologist has a humanities/social science background.

Treatment methods

Psychologists primarily treat with talk therapy — such as CBT, psychodynamic therapy, or ACT. Psychiatrists can prescribe medication (antidepressants, anxiolytics, etc.) and combine it with conversation. For mild to moderate conditions, psychological treatment is often sufficient. For severe mental disorders, medical treatment by a psychiatrist may be necessary.

When to choose which?

Choose a psychologist if you want talk therapy for anxiety, depression, stress, relationship problems, or personal development. Choose a psychiatrist if you need medical assessment, have severe mental disorders, or if your doctor recommends it. In many cases, psychologists and psychiatrists collaborate on treatment.

Prices and subsidies

Psychologists typically cost 900-1,500 DKK per session, with the possibility of subsidies through the national health insurance (ydernummer + doctor's referral). Psychiatrists with a ydernummer are free through health insurance with a referral, but waiting times are often long. Private psychiatrists typically cost 1,500-3,000 DKK per consultation.

Ofte stillede spørgsmål

Can a psychologist prescribe medication?

No, only medical doctors (including psychiatrists) can prescribe medication. Psychologists treat exclusively with talk therapy and other non-medical methods.

Is a psychiatrist better than a psychologist?

Neither is better — they have different roles. Psychologists are experts in talk therapy, psychiatrists in medical treatment. The choice depends on your needs.

Can I see both a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

Yes, many patients with severe conditions benefit from both medical treatment by a psychiatrist and talk therapy by a psychologist. The two professions often collaborate.
